ACTONVILLE SPURS CRICKET CLUB
Affiliated to the Eastern Cricket Union
Established: 1979
HISTORY OF THE CLUB:
The club was founded in 1979 by the Actonville community. The facilities were provided by the Benoni City Council (Ekurhuleni as it is now known). It was a non-racial club from the outset although administration was mostly in the hands of its Indian members. According to Cassim Suliman (former chairman), miners in the area as well as farmers from the Eastern Cape and teachers in Benoni played a pioneering role. The club had a strong anti-apartheid flavour from the outset and was part of the United Cricket Board. A few members found themselves behind bars for taking part in the anti-Gatting Tour placard demonstrations at the then Jan Smuts Airport. When Vincent Barnes, the current head of Cricket South Africa's High Performance Centre, joined Actonville Spurs in 1986 as captain/coach, the club had no junior teams. He was instrumental in organizing a six-a-side tournament to attract young soccer players and the reaction was overwhelmingly positive. That was to be the start of a flourishing youth structure in the cricket section. Actonville Spurs was a founder member of the post-unity Easterns Cricket Union.
